Locus house exterior in West Philadelphia

West Philadelphia

Locus

A group house and community space for people working on what matters — Effective Altruism and adjacent communities, thinking together in Philadelphia.

About

What is Locus?

Locus is a home base for people who care deeply about improving the world — especially those connected to Effective Altruism and nearby intellectual communities. It is both a residence and a gathering place: somewhere to live near collaborators, host small events, and keep good conversations going.

We are building the house intentionally — art on the walls, board games within reach, seating arranged for real discussion, and space for guests who pass through Philadelphia. More detail about our mission and programming will land here as the community takes shape.

The house

Inside Locus

Four bedrooms, shared common spaces, and amenities chosen for people who like hosting friends and taking ideas seriously.

  • Projector

For talks, movies, and working through ideas together.

  • Lots of art

The space is curated to feel lived-in and inspiring.

  • Board games

A shelf ready for strategy nights and casual play.

  • Intentional seating

Layouts designed for conversation, not just screens.

  • Guest room

Small but functional and private for visitors.

  • Cats

The house has cats — worth knowing if you are allergic.

Living here

One room open

Locus has four bedrooms. Three are currently occupied; we are looking for one additional resident who fits the house culture — thoughtful, community-minded, and comfortable sharing space with others doing meaningful work.

Rent is not finalized yet. The figure below is a placeholder until we settle numbers with the household.

Place

Why Philadelphia

Draft placeholder — we will refine this copy as Locus grows.

Philadelphia sits between major East Coast hubs without the same pressure on housing costs. For people in EA and adjacent worlds, that can mean a sustainable place to live while staying connected to research, nonprofits, and visiting collaborators who pass through the region.

West Philly in particular has a long tradition of communal houses, student and faculty energy from nearby universities, and a walkable neighborhood rhythm that supports both focused work and casual encounters. It is a good city for hosting a guest for a week, running a small salon, or simply having room to think.

We chose Philadelphia for Locus because we want a physical anchor on the East Coast that feels welcoming to the communities we care about — not as a replacement for other hubs, but as another locus on the map.
